Most Common Type of Back Surgeries

Back pain is physically discomforting. It affects your mobility and can be very painful. Your doctor can suggest medications or surgery depending on the need for treatment. There are different types of surgeries to heal your back problem.

Let’s see the type of back surgeries

1. Spinal Fusion

This type of surgery takes place when there is motion in the joints.  During this procedure, the doctor will join two or more bones of the vertebrae to limit the motion of joints and this will relieve the pain. Surgeons will use metal plates, screws and rods to hold the vertebrae together.

After the surgery,  you will take 4 to 6 weeks to come back to your normal working routine but it will take a year to heal properly.

2. Laminectomy

This surgery is performed when other treatments have failed. In this process, the surgeon will remove the lamina (the back part of the vertebra). The removal of the lamina will release pressure from the spinal cord and this will eliminate the pain.

It helps the person to improve the ways of living life.  A patient will normally take 4 to 6 weeks to get back to normal routine depending upon the age and health condition of the person.

3. Discectomy

Discectomy is cushions that separate the vertebrae and if these discs slip out of place and become herniated, then it can put pressure on the back nerves or spinal cords which leads to back problem and cause bad pain.

In this type of surgery, a doctor will partly or completely remove your degenerative or herniated disc, which presses on your spinal cord and cause excess pain, numbness or instability.

This surgery will improve mobility and make a person physically active.

It is a minimally invasive surgery which is done by making small cuts and a small camera is used while performing this surgery.

4. Disk Replacement

It is a type of back surgery when the disks which act as cushions for vertebrae become damaged and the surgeon replace and remove them with an artificial or prosthetic disk. It helps to relieve the pain and provides you stability.

There is a possibility of a new disc slipping out of place and needing to be repaired again.

5. Nucleoplasty

In this process, the surgeon needs a needle to send radio waves to remove pressure on a spinal nerve caused by a bulge of the disc. This treatment doesn’t require any incision and helps to get you rid of severe back pain.

6. Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty

It is an outpatient treatment. These procedures are used to treat compression fractures of the vertebral body which is the result of osteoporosis.

Surgeons may use an x-ray to inject a cement mixture into the fractured bone or might insert a balloon through a needle to create a space in the fractured part.
